Age is setting in

The other morning on Good Morning America, they were talking about a twitter war between One Direction and The Wanted (two new boy bands). I get that I am getting older and my kids LOVE to point it out, but dang, while I have heard of those bands, I don’t *know* them. It made me feel…probably what my mother felt when New Kids on the Block came out…old and out of touch. And it wasn’t pleasant.

I never thought I’d be one of those moms—hell one of those women—who didn’t know what was *in* and cool and just was. But everyone my age, barring maybe a someone in the entertainment industry, gets to that point where 1) they have little to no clue who the new it band/singer/actor is and 2) don’t particularly care.

It’s funny, I took 2 of my boys to see 21 Jump Street when it came out (damn funny movie, by the way). There’s a scene where Chan and Jonah go back to high school. Chan is sporting the one shoulder strap only backpack while Jonah is using both. Chan makes fun of him, “The cool kids one-strap it”. Turns out, times have changed and it’s a two-strap world now. Damned if I didn’t *just* have this same convo with my kid the other day. Made that scene pop back into my head. For whatever reason…that made me feel old! And let me tell ya about the one earring vs. two for teen boys—in my day (God, isn’t that just the worst thing to say…), it was one earring on a guy. My 16yo, just got *both* his ears pierced. The hubby shook his head over that one…

I always hated hearing my mom say things like, “You’ll understand when you get older…” whether it was talking about chewing half a pack of gum at once to staying up all night. It burns my butt that I can barely stand to chew even half a piece now. And if I’m not in bed before midnight I can barely function the next day. When did this happen? When did “old” set in. I do not like it, but I don’t know that I can (or want) to actually do anything about it.

What has popped up that reminds you of how you’ve aged? What make you shake your head and think, “oh, those youngsters…” And does it drive you as nuts as me sometimes?
